WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta, has introduced a modification for Android users concerning the complimentary storage space available on Google Drive. Previously, users enjoyed the privilege of storing their chat history, photos, and videos at no cost. However, a new decision requires users to make a choice between acquiring a Google One membership or allowing their WhatsApp data to consume the 15GB storage cap on Google Drive.

These updates were communicated by Google in a November post, elucidating that WhatsApp backups on Android will now utilize space in the Google Account cloud storage. The implementation of this change commenced with WhatsApp Beta users in December 2023 and is slated to reach all WhatsApp users on Android in early 2024.

WhatsApp assures users that a notification will be sent 30 days before the changes take effect. Users can access this information by navigating to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat backup. The full rollout of these modifications is anticipated to encompass all users in 2024.

For those utilizing the WhatsApp Beta app, a message is already appearing, stating, “Backups will start using your Google storage in the next few months.” While opting for a Google One subscription presents a solution for users exceeding the 15GB limit, the company still facilitates data transfer between Android devices.
