WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, is introducing a new feature designed to enhance safety in group chats. Announced on Tuesday, the “context card” will soon be available to all users and is already being rolled out.
Here’s how it works: if you’re added to a group by someone you don’t know, a context card will appear with important details—who added you, when the group was created, and who the creator is. This allows you to decide whether to stay in the group or leave, and it also provides access to safety tools.
“This includes who added you, how recently the group was created, and who created it,” WhatsApp stated.

“This update ramps up safety, building on features like silencing unknown callers, chat lock, in-app privacy check-up, and controlling who can add you to groups,” WhatsApp revealed.
This feature is particularly useful when you meet new people or join new groups without having saved them in your contacts, helping you determine if you want to remain in the group.
The context card also enhances the experience in 1:1 messaging, providing more information if you’re contacted by someone you don’t know.
The introduction of context cards builds on WhatsApp’s existing security features, which include options to control who can add you to groups, silence unknown callers, and lock private chats.
By giving users more context about unfamiliar group invitations, WhatsApp is taking proactive steps to protect its global user base from the growing threats of online scams and unwanted interactions within group messaging.
