An alarming audit report for the fiscal year 2023–24 has revealed the disappearance of arms and ammunition valued at over Rs. 245.5 million from various institutions under the Punjab Home Department, prompting a formal inquiry, according to Dawn News.

Widespread Losses Across Police Offices

The report, presented to the Punjab Assembly, details significant inventory losses across police departments in 12 districts. To date, not a single missing item has been recovered.

Among the most critical cases:

  • DPO Muzaffargarh Office: Missing weapons worth over Rs. 83.4 million (2021–2023)
  • DIG Operations Lahore: Missing arms valued at Rs. 47.1 million
  • Police Office Lahore: Weapons worth Rs. 46.8 million unaccounted for

Other affected districts include:

  • Multan: Rs. 7.4 million
  • Sialkot: Rs. 5.6 million
  • Sahiwal: Rs. 4.3 million
  • Okara: Rs. 3.8 million
  • Gujrat: Rs. 3.5 million
  • Faisalabad: Rs. 2.6 million
Immediate Action Ordered

In light of the findings, Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal has initiated a probe. A special investigation committee has been constituted, led by the Additional IG Special Branch and supported by the DG Monitoring and the Additional Secretary Judicial (Home).

10-Day Deadline for Findings

The committee has been directed to:

  • Thoroughly investigate the discrepancies
  • Collect departmental responses
  • Submit a detailed report within 10 days

This revelation has raised serious concerns regarding inventory management, internal accountability, and public safety.
