US Lifts Terrorist Sanctions On Syrian President Al-Sharaa

The United States has removed President Al-Sharaa of Syria from the Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) list. The decision comes ahead of his scheduled meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on November 10, 2025.

President Al-Sharaa, previously linked to al-Qaeda and past conflicts with US forces in Iraq, had faced international sanctions. These restrictions limited Syria’s diplomatic and economic engagement with the global community.

The US Treasury Department confirmed the removal on Friday. This followed a parallel decision by the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, which lifted a largely symbolic UN sanctions listing against him.

Significance of the Move

US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, described the UN vote as a “strong political signal” showing Syria is entering a new era after the toppling of Assad and his associates in December 2024. Removing these sanctions is aimed at helping Syria rebuild after years of civil war. It may also ease restrictions on trade, finance, and international relations.

President Al-Sharaa’s visit to Washington will be the first by a Syrian president to the White House. The meetings are expected to focus on Syria’s economic reconstruction, regional security, and reintegration into the international community.

Congressional Reaction

US lawmakers have welcomed the move. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee called lifting UN sanctions a positive step toward modernizing Syria’s economy. Congress is reportedly considering repealing additional US sanctions still in effect. This signals a broader effort to normalize relations while ensuring Syria maintains appropriate security measures.

Experts say the decision reflects a shift in US foreign policy toward Syria. It highlights Washington’s interest in stability, reconstruction, and engagement in the region. Analysts suggest the move may open opportunities for investment and diplomatic cooperation.

With sanctions lifted, President Al-Sharaa is expected to lead discussions that could strengthen Syria’s global ties and support long-term recovery.
