US Requests $1.5 Trillion Defense Budget for 2027

US President Donald Trump has requested Congress to approve a $1.5 trillion defense budget for 2027. The proposal comes as the US faces rising costs from the ongoing conflict with Iran and expanding global security responsibilities.

The plan would increase Pentagon spending by more than 40 percent in a single year, marking the largest jump since World War II. Officials say the funds are needed to sustain military operations and rebuild weapons stockpiles that have been depleted.

Closed-door congressional briefings indicate the Iran war could be costing the US as much as $2 billion per day. These figures highlight the financial strain even before accounting for reconstruction and resupply expenses.

To balance the increased defense spending, the administration has proposed $73 billion in cuts to non-defense programs. These reductions would target domestic areas such as housing assistance, education funding, and environmental initiatives. White House officials describe the cuts as eliminating “wasteful spending” while shifting some responsibilities to state and local governments.

Trump has emphasized that military investment must take priority during wartime, even if federal social programs are affected. He stated that programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and daycare could be managed at the state level while the US focuses on “military protection.”

The budget outline is not binding but signals the administration’s priorities. Congress has full authority to revise or reject the proposal. The administration aims to secure over $1.1 trillion through standard appropriations, while attempting to pass an additional $350 billion using a party-line mechanism.

Republican leaders have expressed support for higher defense and law enforcement spending. However, some lawmakers worry about further increasing the US federal deficit, which already exceeds $39 trillion.

Democrats have criticized the plan, arguing it prioritizes war over essential domestic services. They claim the proposed budget shifts resources from healthcare and social programs toward military operations.
