Greenland Dispute UK PM Starmer Stands Strong Against Trump

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has firmly rejected pressure from US President Donald Trump regarding the future of Greenland. The UK PM emphasized that Britain will not compromise its principles on international matters.

Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, Starmer said, “I will not yield. Britain will not yield on our principles and values about the future of Greenland under threats of tariffs.” He also confirmed plans to meet Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in London on Thursday to discuss Greenland’s future.

Trump had threatened tariffs on Britain and other European countries after they opposed his claims on Greenland. The UK PM stressed that Britain’s position is based on international law and respect for Denmark’s sovereignty.

During the session, opposition Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch questioned the UK PM about Trump’s criticism of Britain’s Chagos Islands agreement. Under this deal, Britain will return the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius while leasing the US-UK military base there for 100 years. Trump called the agreement “great stupidity” on social media.

Starmer responded, saying Trump’s comments were intended to pressure him to compromise on key principles. He noted that Trump mentioned Greenland and Chagos in the same statement. The UK PM reiterated that the future of Greenland is a matter for Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone.

The UK PM described Greenland’s status as a “binary issue” with significant global implications. He said Britain has remained clear and consistent in its position, respecting international law and the rights of Greenland and Denmark.

Experts say Starmer’s stance demonstrates Britain’s commitment to principles over political pressure. Analysts also believe it may influence future negotiations with the US and strengthen Britain’s diplomatic credibility.
