A major humanitarian convoy has been sent from Turkey to Iran as part of urgent international relief efforts. The mission comes amid worsening conditions in the region due to ongoing conflict. Aid agencies have described the situation as extremely severe.
The Red Cross and the Turkish Red Crescent launched the emergency shipment from Turkey on Friday. The convoy departed from the outskirts of Ankara. It is carrying essential medical and relief supplies for affected civilians in Iran. Officials say the goal is to support people facing critical shortages.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said humanitarian needs in Iran are extremely high. Spokesperson Scott Craig warned that the health system has been heavily damaged. He added that recovery will take a long time even after the conflict slows down.
Craig said the situation in Iran is desperate. He noted that more than 2,000 people have died in the past five weeks. Infrastructure damage has also made living conditions worse across many regions.
The convoy from Turkey includes around 200 trauma kits. These kits are designed for emergency treatment of bombing injuries. The Turkish Red Crescent also sent four trucks loaded with 48 tonnes of aid supplies.
These supplies include emergency shelters, hygiene kits, and first-aid materials. Aid teams said the support is mainly aimed at displaced families. Many of them are living in unsafe and overcrowded conditions.
Officials from the Turkish Red Crescent said large-scale displacement has taken place. They estimate that millions of people have been affected by the crisis. Thousands of homes and businesses have been destroyed in recent weeks.
The Red Crescent also reported damage to its own facilities. Several centres and ambulances have been destroyed or severely damaged. This has made rescue and relief operations more difficult.
The convoy is expected to reach Tehran within 48 hours after leaving Turkey. Once it arrives, the supplies will be distributed to shelters and medical centers. Local teams will coordinate with international aid groups for smooth delivery.
Humanitarian officials said the use of overland routes from Turkey is an important step. They believe it helps bypass disrupted maritime and air routes in the region. It also ensures faster delivery of life-saving aid.
