Turkey’s Political Crisis Grows as Court may Remove Opposition Leader

A Turkish court has postponed its decision on whether to remove opposition leader Ozgur Ozel and annul the Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) 2023 congress over alleged irregularities, extending political uncertainty until October 24.

The case has already deepened Turkey’s political crisis, with critics calling it an attack on democracy. The court rejected calls to suspend Ozel immediately but requested more details on upcoming CHP congresses.

The probe comes amid a wider crackdown, with hundreds of CHP members, including Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, jailed on graft and terrorism charges. Analysts warn the case could shift Turkey further toward authoritarian rule by undermining opposition parties.

If the congress is annulled, Ozel could lose his post, with possibilities ranging from appointing a trustee to reinstating former leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu. The CHP denies wrongdoing, calling the case politically motivated. Meanwhile, protests erupted, and Turkish markets briefly stabilized after the adjournment.
