Trump’s Focus On Pakistan Pushes India To Rethink China Relations

Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent lunch meeting with Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, has raised concerns in India. The meeting, held at the White House, came weeks after deadly clashes between India and Pakistan. It has triggered a diplomatic protest from New Delhi, according to Indian officials.

India has warned the United States that engaging with Pakistan’s military leadership sends the wrong message. Trump’s decision to host Munir without any senior Pakistani civilian officials was viewed as unusual and significant. It was also the first time a U.S. president had extended such a welcome to Pakistan’s military chief.

Trump and Munir reportedly discussed continued counter-terrorism cooperation. The United States has previously supplied arms to Pakistan, a move India sees as risky. Indian officials fear that weapons given to Pakistan could be used against India if tensions rise again.

India accuses Pakistan’s military of supporting cross-border terrorism. Pakistan denies the claims and says there is no evidence linking them to militant attacks.

Trump’s approach has also affected U.S.-India trade talks. Discussions on tariffs have slowed, and New Delhi is considering new duties against Washington. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has even declined an invitation to visit the U.S.

As ties with the U.S. face strain, India is quietly working to rebuild relations with China. Analysts say this is a strategic hedge against uncertainty in Trump’s foreign policy.

India’s foreign minister recently visited Beijing for the first time since 2020. The two sides are exploring ways to ease trade and security tensions. Despite their complicated history, India sees value in keeping communication open with China.

Trump’s unpredictable diplomacy has added a layer of caution in India’s foreign policy planning. As global alliances shift, New Delhi is recalibrating its position to protect national interests.
