Trump Limits Global Access To Nvidia’s Blackwell AI Chips (1)

U.S. President Trump announced that Nvidia’s most advanced Blackwell AI chips will be reserved exclusively for American companies. This move effectively bars China and other nations from acquiring the high-end technology, signaling a tighter control on AI exports.

Speaking in a CBS “60 Minutes” interview and aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized that the U.S. will maintain a technological edge by keeping the most advanced chips within domestic borders. “The most advanced, we will not let anybody have them other than the United States,” he said.

The announcement comes amid growing U.S.-China competition in artificial intelligence and advanced technology. The decision also suggests a strategic shift from earlier policies that considered exporting AI technology to allied countries to strengthen global partnerships.

Nvidia recently revealed plans to supply more than 260,000 Blackwell chips to South Korea, including major firms like Samsung Electronics. It remains unclear whether Trump’s latest statement could affect these shipments.

Speculation has existed over whether China might receive scaled-down versions of Blackwell chips. Trump clarified that Chinese companies will not obtain the most advanced models but may access less capable alternatives. This approach has sparked debate among policymakers concerned about China’s military and AI capabilities.

Republican Congressman John Moolenaar criticized potential exports, comparing them to “giving Iran weapons-grade uranium.” Lawmakers and analysts argue that limiting high-end chips is crucial for national security and maintaining U.S. technological superiority.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang noted that China currently does not want access to the company’s top chips. Nevertheless, access to Chinese markets remains important for funding U.S.-based research and development efforts.
