Transgenders Riot At Kharian Police Station Over Assault

Members of the transgender community launched an attack on a police station in Kharian, situated in the Gujrat District of Punjab, following reports of an alleged assault on individuals from their community.

The incident unfolded when local authorities conducted a search on Hina, a transgender woman, and a male companion. Subsequently, Hina and the man were detained at the police station, where they purportedly faced physical violence before being released.

The reported assault on their community member incited anger among transgender individuals, prompting them to storm the police station, vandalize property, and engage in altercations with law enforcement personnel.According to police accounts, the assailants appropriated certain items from the police station during the altercation.

Online videos depicting the incident have gone viral, depicting transgender individuals hauling chairs, tables, and other furniture items from the police station in a fit of anger.

Subsequently, members of the transgender community blocked GT Road, leading police to employ baton charges to disperse the demonstrators.

The heavy-handed response by Punjab police has sparked debate online, resulting in the suspension of police officers accused of mistreating transgender individuals by the District Police Officer (DPO).
