[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]KARACHI: Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Shazia Marri on Sunday announced Rs7000 allowance to transgender persons to be disbursed every third month under the Benazir Kafalat programme.
Shazia Marri, who is also Poverty Alleviation Minister, made this announcement in the ceremony of transgenders’ inclusion in the BISP at the Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi.
The minister claimed as many as 50 thousand persons among the country’s transgender population had been registered as beneficiaries of the Benazir Kafalat Programme, making them eligible for the cash assistance.
According to her, the transgender community shied away from approaching the data managers because of how society treated them.
She asserted that the government had a duty to care for the transgender community because they were an integral part of society. This is a step in the right direction for assisting the marginalised transgender people who, in addition to daily assault, also experience blatant discrimination, she said.
The decision to offer BISP cash handouts to the transgender community was made at a time when several acts of violence and prejudice, particularly in the K-P province, have been reported against the group.
According to Shazia, transgender people should register with NADRA first and then visit a BISP centre to continue the application procedure for financial aid.
She claimed that BISP provided financial assistance to nine lakh families. She noted that the program’s goal was to help the underprivileged members of society.
The minister emphasised the difficulties they were having in the nation’s social and economic spheres and added that they were marginalised and estranged from their families.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
