Toll Tax on National Highways and Motorways Increased by 30%

On Tuesday, the National Highway Authority (NHA) announced an increase in toll taxes on major national highways and motorways by up to 30%, effective from October 1, 2024. This adjustment will impact key routes such as the M1, M4, and M5 motorways, leading to higher travel expenses for commuters.

The updated rates include:

  • On the M1 Motorway (Islamabad to Peshawar), toll for cars has risen from Rs 350 to Rs 460.
  • On the M3 Motorway (Lahore to Abdul Hakeem), toll has increased from Rs 500 to Rs 650.
  • On the M4 Motorway (Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad and Multan), the new toll for cars is Rs 850, up from Rs 650.
  • For the M5 Motorway (Multan to Sukkur), a sharp increase from Rs 900 to Rs 50,000 was initially announced due to a clerical error, which is expected to be corrected shortly.

These hikes follow previous increases in August 2024, including toll adjustments on the M2 Motorway (Lahore to Islamabad). The NHA attributes the increases to rising operational costs and the need for maintenance of the highway infrastructure. This move is also part of the government’s broader strategy to improve tax collection within the highway sector amid ongoing fiscal challenges.

Travelers are advised to consider these new rates when planning trips on major national routes.
