Australian cricketer Tim David has been fined for showing dissent during the fifth T20 International against the West Indies. The match took place at Warner Park on July 28.
The incident happened in the fifth over of Australia’s innings. West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph bowled a delivery down the leg side. The on-field umpire did not call it a wide. Tim David reacted by raising his arms in frustration and walking toward the umpire. His actions were considered dissent under the ICC Code of Conduct.
The International Cricket Council confirmed the breach. Tim David was found guilty of violating Article 2.8. This article deals with showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.
As a result, he was fined 10 percent of his match fee. He also received one demerit point on his disciplinary record. This is his first demerit point within a 24-month period.
David accepted the charge and the penalty. The match referee, Reon King, proposed the sanction. Because he agreed, no formal hearing was required.
The charge was laid by on-field umpires Zahid Bassarath and Leslie Reifer. It was supported by third umpire Deighton Butler and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite.
Level 1 breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct can lead to an official warning or a fine of up to 50 percent of the match fee. Players can also receive one or two demerit points.
Despite the incident, David made an important contribution with the bat. He scored 30 runs and helped Australia win the match by three wickets. The victory gave Australia a 5–0 series sweep over the West Indies.
Australia has not issued a separate statement regarding the fine.
