Regrettably, recent events have prompted concerns, since hundreds of thousands of ChatGPT accounts have been compromised, with India and Pakistan bearing the brunt of the damage.

According to a new analysis by Group-IB, a major cybersecurity organisation headquartered in Singapore, more than 100,000 OpenAI ChatGPT credentials appeared on underground web marketplaces between June 2022 and May 2023.

The research by Group-IB revealed about 101,134 compromised devices with stolen ChatGPT credentials.

According to the research, the Asia Pacific area had the highest number of ChatGPT accounts compromised by information thieves, accounting for 40.5% of all occurrences recorded between June 2022 and May 2023.

With 24,925 incidences, the Middle East and Africa came in second, followed by Europe with 16,951 incidents.

Information Thieves

Info stealers are a type of malicious software that collects data from web browsers such as cookies, browsing history, bank card details, crypto wallet information, and more.

These data thieves can also take data from instant messaging applications, emails, and other sensitive information on a victim’s device.

This form of malware can infect several computers at the same time using methods such as phishing or other various ways in order to gather data.

Keep yourself safe.

Group-IB suggests that users take particular actions to reduce the hazards connected with compromised ChatGPT accounts. This includes keeping passwords up to date and enabling two-factor authentication (2FA).

By enabling 2FA, users will be requested to provide an additional verification number, usually sent to their mobile devices, before they can access their ChatGPT accounts.
