In a crucial development towards transforming Pakistan’s energy landscape, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened an important meeting focused on the solarization of agricultural tube wells and combating electricity theft.
PM Sharif emphasized the economic advantages and viability of solar power, stating that it is currently the cheapest source of electricity. He reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting solar energy across the country, following successful endeavors in Balochistan. The Prime Minister also called for cooperation with provincial governments to expand solar initiatives in Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with a special focus on benefiting farmers.

He stressed the need for comprehensive strategies to ensure effective implementation against power pilferage, thanking provincial governments for their support. Addressing concerns over billing accuracy, Sharif asserted that over-billing in electricity bills would not be tolerated. He instructed each electricity distribution company to develop a model for smart metering, aiming for greater transparency and efficiency in electricity consumption monitoring.
Briefings during the meeting highlighted that solarizing agricultural tube wells could potentially save Pakistan $2.7 billion in foreign exchange. Additionally, the ongoing anti-electricity theft campaign has led to significant actions, including the arrest of 84,366 individuals and the registration of 174,562 FIRs nationwide. Detailed statistics from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa showed progress in meter installations and crackdowns on illegal electricity connections.
