The Thai government is actively seeking German support to secure visa-free travel for its citizens to European Union countries. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has raised this issue with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during the latter’s official visit to Thailand. Thavisin emphasized the reciprocal nature of the request, as Thailand currently grants a visa-free stay of up to 30 days for citizens of Germany and other Schengen member states.

During discussions, Thavisin pointed out that over 700,000 German tourists benefitted from visa-free entry to Thailand in the previous year. He urged support for exempting Thai nationals from EU visa requirements, anticipating a positive impact on foreign tourist numbers.

It is important to note that while Germany’s support is crucial, the ultimate decision rests with all Schengen states. Approval requires consensus among these nations, along with adherence to additional conditions related to security and scrutiny for travelers.

As of now, there has been no official response from the German side. The Thai government spokesperson indicated that President Steinmeier expressed general support for sustainable development.

Thailand has been actively pursuing agreements with various countries to facilitate visa-free travel. A noteworthy achievement is the recent agreement with China, enabling citizens of both nations to travel visa-free permanently starting March of this year. Additionally, citizens of Kazakhstan have been granted visa-free travel to Thailand.

Thailand’s tourism sector is a significant contributor to its GDP, accounting for nearly 20 percent. However, the industry has faced challenges, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The country is renowned for its rich cultural heritage rooted in Buddhism, the natural beauty of destinations like Phuket and Pattaya, the vibrant atmosphere of Bangkok, delectable cuisine, UNESCO-recognized temples and historical sites, diverse festivals, and wellness and spa retreats.

In summary, Thailand’s diplomatic efforts to secure visa-free travel for its citizens align with its commitment to boosting tourism, a vital economic sector. The engagement with Germany reflects a reciprocal approach, emphasizing the importance of facilitating seamless travel for nationals of both countries.
