Former Test off-spinner Tauseef Ahmed is likely to assume the role of national chief selector on an interim basis, following Inzamam-ul-Haq’s recent resignation amid allegations of a conflict of interest. Inzamam’s resignation came as a result of his alleged association with a UK-based player agency, which prompted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to launch an inquiry.
In light of Inzamam’s departure and the ongoing investigation, there is a proposal to appoint a temporary chief selector, and Tauseef, a member of the selection committee, is the frontrunner for this role, specifically for Pakistan’s upcoming three-Test series in Australia, scheduled for December-January.
A five-member investigation committee was formed to examine Inzamam’s and national team vice-captain Mohammad Rizwan’s connections with the mentioned player agency. This committee was expected to submit its findings to PCB Interim Management Committee chairman Zaka Ashraf by November 6, but they were unable to meet this deadline, and a new completion date has not been established.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the investigation and the need to select the national Test team for the Australia tour, the PCB is considering appointing Tauseef as the temporary chief selector. This would ensure a responsible individual oversees the team selection process, especially during the ongoing ICC World Cup in India, where the need for player selection might arise.
It’s worth noting that the current interim PCB chief, Zaka, has not been granted the authority to make appointments during his three-month extension. This further emphasizes the need for a temporary chief selector in the current situation. Interestingly, a similar restriction on appointments was imposed on Zaka by former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif when he served as the PCB Interim Management Committee chairman earlier this year, yet Zaka made several high-level appointments during his tenure.
