Syrian authorities have announced the arrest of a senior Islamic State (IS) jihadist during a security operation in the capital, Damascus. According to an official statement, the suspect was detained following what was described as a carefully planned intelligence-led raid carried out by Syrian security forces.
The interior ministry said the detained individual held a senior operational role within the IS network and was allegedly involved in planning and coordinating attacks. Officials claimed the suspect had been operating covertly in Damascus, using false identities and safe houses to evade detection for an extended period.
Security sources stated that the arrest was made without casualties, highlighting what they described as improved intelligence coordination and surveillance capabilities. The suspect was reportedly tracked for weeks before the operation, allowing forces to move in at what authorities called the “appropriate moment.”
Syrian officials said weapons, electronic devices, and documents were seized during the raid, which may provide valuable intelligence about IS sleeper cells still active in urban areas. Investigators are now analyzing the recovered material to identify possible accomplices and planned operations.
Despite IS losing territorial control in Syria years ago, the group continues to pose a security threat through small cells and sporadic attacks. Damascus and other major cities have seen occasional security incidents, underlining ongoing concerns about militant infiltration and underground networks.
The government said the arrest demonstrates its continued commitment to combating terrorism and restoring security nationwide. Officials stressed that operations against extremist groups will continue, particularly in densely populated areas, to prevent future attacks and maintain stability.
