Supreme Court's Senior-Most Judge Appointed as New Chief Justice

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud has officially recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor, marking the next step in appointing the new head of the Supreme Court. Justice Khanna is set to take over as CJI following Justice Chandrachud’s retirement on November 10, 2024, with his tenure expected to continue until May 13, 2025.

Justice Khanna’s recommendation aligns with the tradition of appointing the senior-most judge to the position. He has a distinguished legal career with a wealth of experience in constitutional, commercial, and criminal law. Over the years, he has held significant roles, including serving as an additional public prosecutor and as senior standing counsel for various government agencies.

In early October, the law ministry requested CJI Chandrachud to propose his successor, which led to Justice Khanna’s nomination. The Union government is expected to confirm his appointment soon, with an official notification likely to follow.

Notably, Justice Khanna’s career path is unique; he was elevated directly to the Supreme Court in 2019 without first serving as a chief justice of a high court, a distinctive milestone in the Indian judiciary.
