Supreme Court Urges Use Of AI To Cut Justice Delays

The Supreme Court has stressed the need to use AI to tackle delays in Pakistan’s judicial system. It warned that long delays in cases often mean justice is denied.

The court said timely justice is a constitutional right. It is important for maintaining public trust in the legal system.

A recent judgement focused on a decade-old auction case that had remained unresolved for over 10 years. The case was in the Peshawar High Court for a decade before reaching the Supreme Court in 2022. It had not been heard until now.

The judgement highlighted how delays weaken the justice system. Prolonged court cases especially hurt poor and marginalized people. These groups cannot afford the costs of long legal battles. Delays also discourage investment and damage the reputation of institutions.

Currently, over 2.2 million cases are pending in courts across Pakistan. About 55,941 of these cases are in the Supreme Court alone. This huge backlog shows the urgent need for modern solutions.

The court called on all courts to use AI and smart case management systems. These technologies can help speed up court processes and ensure accountability. The court said that timely justice is not just an administrative matter but a constitutional duty.

The Supreme Court also dismissed the 14-year-old auction case petition due to a lack of follow-up. Neither the petitioner nor any representative appeared in court.

The court ruled, “Delay in justice is not merely a denial of justice; in many cases, it amounts to the end of justice.”

Experts say AI can play a key role in reducing delays and making the judicial system more efficient. Its adoption is seen as essential to restoring public confidence in the courts.
