Sudan Army Pullback From El-Fasher Sparks UN Alarm

The Sudan conflict has intensified as the Sudan army retreated from El-Fasher, the last city under its control in Darfur. The withdrawal has allowed the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to seize more ground, raising fears of mass atrocities.

The United Nations has warned that civilians in El-Fasher are at extreme risk. Reports of shelling, raids, and forced displacements continue to rise as both sides fight for control. Thousands have fled, while others remain trapped without food or medical aid.

The Sudan army’s retreat marks a major setback in the country’s long-running war. Since April 2023, the conflict between the military and the RSF has spread across multiple regions, leaving millions displaced. Aid agencies describe the situation as “beyond catastrophic,” as hospitals run out of supplies and humanitarian convoys face attacks.

UN officials have urged both sides to stop fighting and open humanitarian routes. “The level of suffering is unbearable,” said a UN spokesperson, calling for urgent action to prevent another tragedy like Darfur’s past.

The Sudan conflict now threatens to spill across borders, with regional tensions already on the rise. In a related diplomatic move, Israel and South Sudan recently held discussions about a potential plan to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to South Sudan, a move that has drawn widespread concern and international debate.

Analysts say the Sudan army’s loss of El-Fasher may shift the balance of power permanently in favor of the RSF. The group already controls most of Darfur and parts of the capital, Khartoum. With communication lines cut and foreign aid restricted, civilians continue to bear the heaviest toll.

As the Sudan conflict worsens, international pressure grows for a ceasefire. But on the ground, hope for peace feels distant as violence and uncertainty spread through what was once Sudan’s final stronghold in Darfur.
