A powerful earthquake struck off the southern coast of Crete in the early hours of Wednesday, registering a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale, according to Germany’s GFZ. The quake, which occurred at a depth of 83 kilometers, sent tremors across the eastern Mediterranean.
The US Geological Survey recorded a similar seismic event, citing a magnitude 6.0 quake near the town of Fry, just 10 miles offshore and around 70 miles east of Ágios Nikólaos on Crete. The quake hit just before 2:00 a.m. local time.

While the quake’s strength was significant, no immediate reports of injuries or damage have emerged from Greece. Nonetheless, authorities issued a tsunami advisory as a precaution, urging residents near the coast to stay away from seafront areas.
The tremors were also felt in Egypt, particularly along the northern coast. Egypt’s National Research Institute confirmed a 6.4 magnitude quake occurred offshore, but there were no reports of casualties or damage.
Seismologists continue to monitor the region for aftershocks, as the eastern Mediterranean remains a highly active seismic zone.
