Spotify Is About to Change Music Forever—But There’s a Twist

Spotify has signed new licensing agreements with Universal Music Group. The deal will support the launch of new generative AI music tools. These tools will allow fans to create covers and remixes using approved songs.

The agreement includes both recorded music rights and publishing rights. It gives Spotify the legal permission needed to build AI-based music features. These features will focus on user-generated covers and remix content.

Spotify said the AI tools will be available as a paid add-on for Premium users. However, the company has not announced a launch date or pricing details yet. The feature is still under development.

The new system will allow users to generate AI-powered versions of songs from participating artists. These may include remixes and cover versions. Spotify said this will open new creative possibilities for fans.

At the same time, Spotify stressed that artist control will remain central. Each artist and rightsholder will decide whether to join the program. Participation will be fully optional.

The platform also highlighted that consent, credit, and compensation are key parts of the system. Artists will be credited when their music is used in AI-generated content. They will also receive payment through the licensing structure.

Alex Norström said fan-made covers and remixes are an important challenge for the platform. He explained that Spotify is working to support both creators and listeners. The goal is to balance innovation with artist protection.

Sir Lucian Grainge also supported the initiative. He said the project is designed to protect human creativity. At the same time, it creates new revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters.

Spotify’s move also places it in competition with AI music startups. Companies like Suno have already attracted attention in the generative music space. However, Spotify is taking a different approach. It is focusing on licensing agreements before launching tools.

The company is also expanding its Premium ecosystem with new features. Alongside AI tools, Spotify introduced a feature called “Reserved.” This feature helps Premium users access concert tickets for their favorite artists.

Spotify said Reserved will identify dedicated fans. It will then set aside tickets during sales. This aims to reduce ticket competition and improve access for real fans.

For now, Spotify has not confirmed a release date for the AI tools. The company only said they will launch in the future as part of Premium add-ons.
