Specialists Warn of Rising Eye Disease Cases Across UAE

Hospitals across the United Arab Emirates are witnessing a clear increase in eye infection cases, as more residents seek medical care for symptoms such as redness, itching, swelling, and irritation. Doctors report that conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is spreading quickly and affecting people of all ages.

Eye specialists explain that the infection is highly contagious and attribute the growing number of cases to environmental factors, daily habits, and the rising trend of self-medication without professional advice. Many patients attempt to treat their symptoms using over-the-counter drops or home remedies, which often aggravate the problem instead of resolving it.

According to doctors, viral conjunctivitis accounts for most eye infections, while allergic and bacterial forms are also frequently diagnosed. Experts caution that self-diagnosis and the misuse of non-prescribed medications can worsen symptoms, contribute to antibiotic resistance, and, in serious situations, even threaten vision.

Environmental conditions are also contributing to increased eye sensitivity. Continuous exposure to air conditioning, dust, sand, and prolonged screen time can weaken the eyes’ natural defenses. In crowded places such as schools, workplaces, and gyms, infections spread more easily. Improper contact lens care further raises the risk of contamination.

Health professionals note that early eye symptoms often go unnoticed or are dismissed. Mild redness, burning sensations, watery or sticky discharge, light sensitivity, and slight swelling are commonly mistaken for fatigue or minor irritation. Ignoring these warning signs can allow the infection to worsen.

Doctors advise seeking immediate eye care if symptoms persist beyond two days, intensify, or are accompanied by pain or blurred vision. Preventive measures include regular handwashing, avoiding touching the eyes, not sharing personal items, and pausing contact lens use during infection. They also clarify that conjunctivitis spreads through contact, not simply by looking at someone.
