SEOUL: A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over his brief attempt to impose martial law, investigators revealed Tuesday. This move follows Yoon’s suspension of civilian rule earlier this month, leading to a significant political crisis in South Korea.

Yoon was removed from his presidential duties by parliament, but a constitutional court decision is pending regarding the confirmation of his impeachment. The Joint Investigation Headquarters confirmed the issuance of an arrest and search warrant against the suspended president.

Yoon faces serious charges, including insurrection, with potential penalties ranging from life imprisonment to the death penalty. Investigators had requested the warrant after Yoon missed a third questioning session, citing concerns that he might avoid future summonses.

Yoon’s defense lawyer argued that the arrest warrant was illegal, claiming that the investigators lacked the authority to probe the president. Despite the warrant being issued, it remains uncertain whether investigators will be able to execute it due to security measures around Yoon’s residence.

Protests are expected, with supporters of Yoon and anti-impeachment demonstrators gathering near his residence. While a significant arrest is unlikely in the immediate future, the legal process is expected to continue under close scrutiny.
