A major initiative to improve the water quality of the Soan River and provide clean drinking water to residents of Rawat and Chauntra has been approved. The project aims to ensure a 24-hour water supply for over 250,000 people in these densely populated areas of Rawalpindi district.
Officials confirmed that the feasibility study has been cleared, and Rs150 million will be released within the next two weeks. A detailed study will be completed in two months, after which the final report will be submitted for government approval. The project will be executed under the supervision of the district administration and district council.

Once a reliable water source for over 500 years, the Soan River is now heavily polluted due to sewage discharge, leading to a decline in groundwater levels. While groundwater is still available at depths of 400–500 feet, contamination from wastewater has rendered it unsafe.
The approved study will evaluate two solutions:
- Installing multiple tube wells along the riverbanks with advanced water treatment plants to purify groundwater.
- Setting up two to three centralized treatment plants to directly filter river water and distribute it through a new pipeline network.
Additionally, a five-million-gallon water storage tank will be built, along with large-diameter steel pipelines to transport treated water to Rawat and Chauntra. This project is expected to significantly improve water accessibility and quality for the local population.
