Daducha Dam To Resolve Rawalpindi's Prolonged Water Scarcity

After a hiatus, FWO resumes Daducha Dam construction in Rawalpindi. The Punjab Planning and Development Department approved the revised dam cost, nearly doubling from Rs. 6.4 billion to Rs. 12.7 billion due to escalating material and land prices.

Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha anticipates the dam’s completion in two years, providing Rawalpindi with 35 MGD water. Situated upstream of the Soan River, the dam collects rainwater from Murree and Kahuta hills, stored in a Daducha village lake. Project work, initiated in 2018, faced a legal stay from the Lahore High Court during spillway structure completion.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the irrigation department in February 2022, allowing the dam’s progress. The Commissioner shared project specifics, stating 16,194 kanal and 14 marla were acquired for the dam, measuring 123 feet high, 737 feet long, with a catchment area of 129 square miles. Dam completion is expected to resolve Rawalpindi’s water supply shortage.
