Sindh Stops Issuance Of Fresh Firearms Permits

Sindh’s Caretaker Chief Minister, Maqbool Baqar, has ordered a suspension of new firearms license issuance throughout the province. This decision follows an investigation revealing the involvement of a network renting guns to criminals.

In response to the directive, the Interior Secretary issued a notification implementing the ban on new arms permits. Recent street crimes and targeted killings have shown evidence of new firearms, with bullets not matching those from previous incidents.

Local law enforcement, including the police and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), has struggled to provide a comprehensive report on city street crimes. Federal investigative agencies have now taken over the matter, leading to the arrest of several suspects.

Karachi has experienced a significant surge in street crimes in recent months. According to data from the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), over 50 Karachi residents lost their lives in August this year. Last month, 62 individuals fell victim to various street crimes in the city. Additionally, citizens had 207 vehicles, 5,399 motorcycles, and 2,464 mobile phones stolen during that month.

Notably, Atiq Mir, Chairman of the All Karachi Trade Union, has called for the Pakistan Army’s intervention to combat street crimes in the city.
