Female Mobility Gets A Boost With Sindh’s Scooter Training Programme

The Sindh govt launches scooter training programme for women this week, marking a bold step toward enhancing female mobility, confidence, and independence across the province. The initiative aims to address long-standing transport challenges faced by women and equip them with safe riding skills under the government’s broader mobility framework.

Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced at a press briefing that training sessions have already started in key Karachi districts including Korangi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and Malir to help women learn practical scooter riding techniques. The programme, connected with the Pink Scooty Scheme, is designed to improve accessibility and everyday convenience for female students and working women.

According to officials, the training hub in Hyderabad opened on December 18 and runs daily from morning to evening, offering hands-on, safety-focused coaching. Similar training will soon begin in cities such as Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Mirpurkhas to expand access province-wide.

The programme forms part of Phase II of Sindh’s electric scooter distribution plan, which includes free EV scooter allocations and licensing support for eligible women. To qualify, participants must be permanent Sindh residents, hold a learner’s permit or driving license, and meet other criteria outlined by the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA).

Officials say the training is not only about riding mechanics but also about promoting women’s empowerment, reducing reliance on unsafe or costly transport, and encouraging independence in daily life. Minister Memon emphasised that safe, reliable transport options are essential to women’s social and economic participation.

While Sindh moves forward with women-centric transport schemes, other regions are also prioritizing women’s safety and mobility. Balochistan, for example, recently launched a pink bus service for women’s safety and convenience, highlighting a shared national focus on inclusive public transport solutions.

As the Sindh govt launches scooter training programme for women, thousands of women across the province are expected to benefit, gaining skills that can transform how they travel for education, work, and personal commitments.
