Feeding the poor is considered an obligation in the Sikh religion, and the Sikh community in Peshawar frequently distributes free food, but special arrangements are made for iftari during the holy month of Ramazan.

Different Sikh families in the walled city’s Mohalla Jogan Shah area take turns arranging it, so these ‘distarkhwans’ work all month.

In addition to donating money to the needy, Sikh merchants are known for announcing special discounts in their stores during Ramazan. The gathering of Sikhs around long plastic mats spread to serve food to fasting locals in places like the Bolton Block of Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) is a strange yet pleasant experience for ordinary people.

“This year, within four days of Ramazan, we distributed food items to 100 deserving (Muslim) families,” says Jatinder Singh, Chairman of the National Peace Council for Interfaith Harmony’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter. We are currently organising an iftari for which Sikh youth have volunteered in addition to providing food packets, according to Jatinder.

He added that each ration pack contains essential items such as cooking oil, rice, pulses, chick peas, beans, sugar, and tea.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
