Star Indian opening batsman, Shubman Gill, will be unavailable for selection in the upcoming second World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan. The BCCI official has announced that Gill won’t be making the trip to Delhi for the second game and will instead remain in Chennai under the care of the medical team.
Gill, a right-handed batsman, has been diagnosed with dengue fever, causing him to miss the first clash against Australia at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In his absence, the Rohit Sharma-led side placed their trust in Ishan Kishan for the opening position, but unfortunately, he couldn’t make an impact and was dismissed for a golden duck.

Just two days before the match against Australia, head coach Rahul Dravid expressed hope that Gill might recover in time for the game, as his progress was promising. However, Rohit Sharma confirmed at the toss that despite waiting until Sunday, Gill was still not fit to be part of the playing XI against Australia.
It’s worth noting that Shubman Gill has played a crucial role for the Men in Blue over the past couple of years and was the top run-scorer in the Asia Cup 2023. In 2023, Gill has been the leading run-scorer in the 50-over format, amassing 1230 runs with an impressive average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03.
