The Multan–Sukkur Motorway (M-5) will remain temporarily closed for traffic every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM starting June 16 due to maintenance work being carried out by the Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO). The closure is necessary to facilitate repairs and maintenance on high-transmission towers and power lines located near the motorway.
According to Central Region Motorway Police spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed, the affected stretch will be the Iqbalabad to Guddu section of the motorway. The temporary closure will remain in effect during the designated hours each day, while authorities complete the required maintenance operations safely.
To manage the flow of traffic, alternative routes have been arranged for motorists. Vehicles travelling from Multan to Sukkur will be diverted from the Iqbalabad Interchange to the N-5 National Highway. Similarly, traffic moving from Sukkur to Multan will be redirected from the Guddu Interchange to the N-5.
Motorway authorities have also announced restrictions for heavy transport vehicles during the closure period. Heavy traffic will not be allowed to enter the motorway through the Rohri Toll Plaza between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, and transport operators have been advised to plan their schedules accordingly.
Officials stated that the alternate route via the N-5 National Highway is approximately 148 kilometres longer than the motorway route. As a result, light transport vehicles (LTVs) are expected to experience an additional travel time of around two hours, while heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) could face delays of up to three hours.
The Motorway Police have urged commuters and transporters to plan their journeys in advance and allocate at least 30 extra minutes for travel. Travellers are also encouraged to stay updated on traffic conditions and alternative route information before departure. For assistance and real-time updates, motorists can contact the Motorway Police helpline by dialing 130.
