Senate Panel Proposes Boosting Donkey Exports to China

The Senate Standing Committee on Commerce convened on Wednesday and recommended that Pakistan should export whole, living donkeys to China instead of just their skins. The committee noted that current donkey exports to China face no restrictions, while protocols for exporting donkey meat are being developed.

In addition to discussing donkey exports, the meeting highlighted plans by the Ministry of Commerce to establish new trade missions in several countries, including Syria, Oman, Mozambique, Tanzania, Singapore, and Urumqi. Existing trade missions are already operational in Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, and Kyrgyzstan.

The committee also mentioned Pakistan’s involvement in the $12 billion ‘Look Africa’ initiative, aimed at enhancing economic ties with African nations. Furthermore, discussions are ongoing to establish barter trade agreements with Iran and Russia.

Looking ahead, Pakistan anticipates signing a transit trade agreement with Azerbaijan later this month, potentially allowing the country to facilitate the transit of 500 trucks daily. Additionally, efforts are underway to introduce new tariff lines aimed at addressing the trade deficit.
