Senate By-Election in Punjab Postponed Amid Court Case on Reserved Seats
The Senate by-election scheduled for May 29 to fill a vacant seat from Punjab has been postponed, sources within the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) confirmed.
According to officials, the decision to defer the polling stems from an ongoing court case regarding reserved seats. The ECP clarified that no by-election can proceed until the Punjab Assembly’s electoral college is complete, which is currently under legal scrutiny.
The vacant seat was previously held by Senator Sajid Mir, and the election to fill it will now depend on the outcome of the court’s ruling.
“The Senate by-election will remain suspended until the court delivers its verdict,” an ECP source stated.
The delay underscores the impact of legal challenges on the electoral process and adds uncertainty to the timeline for restoring full representation in the Senate from Punjab.
