Sam Altman, the former head of OpenAI, is poised to re-assume leadership of the company, now under the oversight of a newly constituted board.
This announcement follows a period of speculation and upheaval within the prominent artificial intelligence startup situated in Silicon Valley.
In a noteworthy reversal of events, Altman, who was dismissed by OpenAI’s board of directors last week, is set to resume control of the high-profile AI startup, as disclosed by the company late on Tuesday in California.
As part of a “preliminary agreement,” Altman will operate under the guidance of a newly appointed board of directors. This board will initially be comprised of Bret Taylor, the former CEO of Salesforce, serving as chair, along with Larry Summers, the former US Treasury secretary, and Adam D’Angelo, who is both an existing member of the OpenAI board and the CEO of Quora.

Sam Altman has shared his statement on X regarding his return to OpenAI:
“I have a deep affection for OpenAI, and all my recent actions have been in service of preserving this team and its mission. When I made the decision to join Microsoft on Sunday evening, it became evident that this was the best course of action for both me and the team. With the new board and Satya’s support, I am eager to return to OpenAI and build upon our strong partnership with Microsoft.”

In addition to Altman, Greg Brockman, who previously served as the president and chairman at OpenAI, will also be rejoining the company. OpenAI had removed him from the board during Altman’s departure, and Brockman resigned from OpenAI shortly after the announcement.
