A Russian stealth combat drone, the S-70 Okhotnik, was shot down near the front lines in eastern Ukraine, generating significant interest. Ukrainian forces examining the wreckage believe this unmanned aerial vehicle is integral to Russia’s advanced military capabilities. The drone, which is reportedly the size of a fighter jet, was discovered near Kostyantynivka, an area close to ongoing hostilities.

The incident began with witnesses spotting two vapor trails in the sky, initially leading them to believe a Russian warplane was attacking another, possibly resulting in friendly fire. However, the debris indicated that the Okhotnik drone had been destroyed. Developed since 2012, this stealth unmanned aircraft is designed for ground and aerial strikes as well as reconnaissance missions. It was likely flying alongside a Russian Su-57 fighter jet, prompting speculation that the warplane either attempted to regain control of the drone or was ordered to destroy it to prevent it from falling into Ukrainian hands. Experts suggest that the drone lost control possibly due to electronic jamming by Ukrainian forces.

This crash marks the first known use of the Okhotnik in combat during Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, with the drone having been in development for over a decade and making its first flight in 2019. While its stealth capabilities are considered advanced, recent analysis from Ukrainian experts indicates potential vulnerabilities in its technology.

Ukrainian aviation specialists are currently analyzing the wreckage, with one expert noting that the drone’s design might allow for easier detection by radar. Among the debris found at the crash site was a piece of Russia’s long-range D-30 glide bomb, known for its destructive capabilities. It remains uncertain if the drone was fully operational or part of Moscow’s testing with its Su-57 jets, but this loss underscores Russia’s ongoing efforts to innovate in its military strategies.

Although neither Moscow nor Kyiv has officially commented on the incident, analysts believe the Okhotnik’s failure represents a significant setback for Russian military objectives. For Ukraine, recovering the wreckage provides a valuable opportunity to analyze this technology, potentially benefiting their Western allies in fortifying defenses against Russia’s advancing arsenal.
