Pacific nations on high alert after one of the strongest quakes in decades

A powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East early Wednesday, leading to tsunami warnings across the Pacific. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed it as one of the ten strongest quakes ever recorded globally.

The epicenter was near Petropavlovsk, a sparsely populated area. Russia reported a tsunami that flooded the port town of Severo-Kurilsk, where waves reached up to four meters. Authorities evacuated around 2,000 residents. Minor injuries were reported, but no serious casualties.

In nearby Elizovsky district, tsunami waves between three and four meters were also recorded. Residents described intense shaking and a rush to evacuate. Officials declared a state of emergency in Russia’s northern Kuril Islands, where buildings were damaged and several areas flooded.

The event triggered Pacific-wide tsunami alerts. Countries including Japan, the U.S., Mexico, Ecuador, and Chile issued warnings for their coastal regions. Japan’s Hokkaido observed waves around 30 centimeters, prompting people to move inland. No major damage was reported there.

In Hawaii, authorities sounded sirens, urging both residents and tourists to seek higher ground. Honolulu officials warned against approaching shorelines. Vessels were sent to open sea to avoid damage, and government staff were sent home early.

This was the most powerful quake in the Kamchatka region since 1952. It has been followed by at least six aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 6.3 to 6.9. Seismic experts warn of more aftershocks and possible wave surges in the coming hours.

The US Tsunami Warning Centers stated that waves of up to three meters could hit parts of Russia, Hawaii, and the northwestern Hawaiian Islands. One-meter waves were expected in areas such as Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Taiwan.

Emergency services continue to monitor the situation. Coastal communities remain on high alert as authorities emphasize public safety and preparedness.
