The interim federal government has refuted rumors regarding the discontinuation of Rs5,000 banknotes in Pakistan.

This response comes in light of a purported Finance Division notification circulating on social media, claiming a nationwide ban on the use and circulation of Rs5,000 currency notes, effective September 30, 2023.

The notification, citing the Pakistan Penal Code, generated confusion among citizens, prompting them to seek official clarification. The Federal Ministry of Finance explicitly stated that there were no plans to ban Rs5,000 currency notes, dismissing the circulating notification as fake.

Additionally, interim Information Minister Murtaza Solangi denounced the notification as fraudulent.

The controversy emerged following a resolution presented by PTI senators in the Senate, advocating for a ban on the use of Rs5,000 notes as a measure to combat corruption in the country.
