Royal Caribbean Facing Lawsuit After Ex-Employee Installs Hidden Camera, Filming 1,000 Passengers

A passenger aboard a Royal Caribbean International cruise has initiated a class-action lawsuit against the company and a former crew member after a hidden camera was discovered in a bathroom, allegedly recording up to 960 individuals. The lawsuit was filed in the Southern District of Florida on behalf of a passenger identified as “Jane Doe” and other affected passengers from the Symphony of the Seas cruise.

This legal action follows the conviction of Arvin Joseph Mirasol, a Filipino stateroom attendant, who was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for creating child pornography. The incident came to light on February 25 when a guest reported finding a concealed camera under a bathroom sink. Mirasol was arrested when the ship docked in Fort Lauderdale.

During the investigation, authorities discovered videos on Mirasol’s devices that depicted children aged 2 to 17 in various stages of undress. The lawsuit claims that Mirasol’s illegal surveillance also included adult passengers, alleging that he transmitted or uploaded images of the plaintiff while she was undressed and engaged in private activities to third parties and potentially to the dark web without her knowledge or consent.

As a result of this violation, the plaintiff has reportedly suffered significant emotional distress, manifesting in physical symptoms such as dizziness, insomnia, and discomfort. The case underscores serious concerns regarding privacy and safety aboard cruise ships.
