Flour and Roti Prices have increased sharply across Punjab, even as the wheat harvest continues. The unexpected rise has raised concerns among consumers and market observers. Many believe the increase is putting extra pressure on household budgets.
According to reports, private companies have started selling flour at higher rates under branded labels. These companies are offering flour at around Rs180 per kilogram. This is significantly higher than the estimated cost based on wheat prices and milling expenses.
The government has set the wheat price at Rs3,500 per 40 kilograms. However, private firms are selling flour at nearly Rs7,200 per 40 kilograms. At the local level, grinding wheat costs between Rs400 and Rs500 per 40 kilograms. After milling, the total cost of flour reaches around Rs4,000 per 40 kilograms.
Despite this cost, flour is being sold at much higher rates. Market estimates show that flour costing Rs98 to Rs108 per kilogram is being sold at Rs180 per kilogram. This gap has raised questions about pricing practices in the private sector.
The rise in flour rates has directly impacted Roti Prices. In many areas, roti has become less available at traditional tandoors. Where it is still available, prices have increased. The cost of one roti has gone up from Rs14 to Rs20, showing an increase of Rs6 per piece.
Tandoor owners say they have been forced to increase prices. They claim that higher costs of LPG gas and flour have affected their business. According to them, it is not possible to maintain old rates under current conditions.
In several areas, new Roti Prices have been implemented without following official price lists. This has created confusion among customers. Authorities have yet to take strict action to control the situation.
Experts say that better regulation is needed to stabilize the market. They also stress the importance of monitoring supply chains. The current situation shows that even during harvest season, prices can rise due to market factors.
