Two-Headed Kingsnake Discovered in California Becomes Global Sensation
In the fascinating world of reptiles, unusual discoveries continue to captivate both scientists and animal lovers. One such extraordinary case has recently emerged from a reptile facility in Berkeley, California, where a rare two-headed California kingsnake has drawn worldwide attention.
This remarkable snake, which hatched at the East Bay Vivarium, features two distinct heads—each with its own personality and control over the body. The more dominant head has been named Angel, while the other, Zeke, is less active due to a malformed esophagus that makes eating difficult.

Despite the challenges, Zeke and Angel have survived for over seven months, a significant milestone for an animal with such a rare condition. Two-headed reptiles, known scientifically as bicephalic, occur in roughly 1 out of every 100,000 births, making this case particularly exceptional.
Shared Organs, Shared Survival
The snake’s two heads share vital internal organs, including a single heart and stomach, which requires careful and precise care. So far, only Angel has been able to eat properly, but caretakers at the East Bay Vivarium remain hopeful for Zeke’s eventual progress.
Veterinarians and herpetologists agree that with dedicated care, the snake has the potential to live a normal lifespan of 20 to 30 years and could grow up to four feet long.
Not for Sale, But Under the Spotlight
Currently, Zeke and Angel are not available for sale and are staying under close observation by the Vivarium’s team. The staff are committed to ensuring the rare snake’s health, safety, and long-term well-being.
