Ramadan Likely to Complete 30 Days in Pakistan, PMD Forecasts

Ramadan 1447 AH is expected to complete a full 30 days in Pakistan this year, according to forecasts by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The department indicated that the Shawwal crescent is unlikely to be sighted on March 19, which corresponds to the 29th of Ramadan.

The Met Office stated that the new moon of Shawwal is expected to be born at 6:23 am on March 19. However, by the evening observation window, the moon’s age at meteorological observatories is projected to be only 12 to 13 hours — a duration considered insufficient for visibility according to PMD standards. Based on these astronomical calculations, the department concluded that sighting of the Shawwal moon on the evening of March 19 is not expected.

The PMD emphasized that this assessment is purely astronomical. The official confirmation of the moon sighting and the announcement of Eid ul Fitr will be made by Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which is responsible for verifying the crescent and declaring the start of Shawwal.

Muslims across the country can thus anticipate that Ramadan will likely extend to 30 days, with Eid ul Fitr expected to be observed on the following day after the completion of the holy month. Authorities and citizens are advised to await the official announcement from the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee before making final preparations for Eid celebrations.

This astronomical forecast helps in planning religious observances and public schedules during the last days of Ramadan, ensuring smooth organization for fasting, prayers, and Eid festivities.
