Punjab Introduces New Legislation to Regulate Big Cat Population

LAHORE – In a bid to control the rising population of lions and other big cats in Punjab, authorities are set to implement sterilization measures under newly introduced legislation.

Mandatory Registration and Breeding Restrictions

Under the new law, all breeding farms must register their big cats, with a registration fee of Rs50,000 per animal. The buying and selling of lions and cubs is strictly prohibited, and those making social media videos featuring these animals will face legal action.

Director General of Punjab Wildlife, Mudassar Riaz Malik, stated that the new regulations will help control the population of lions, tigers, pumas, cheetahs, and jaguars. Owners failing to register their animals will have them confiscated.

If a breeding farm exceeds the permitted number of lions, the owner cannot sell them but may donate them to a zoo or another breeding facility. Gifting big cats is also banned.

Phase-Out Plan to Discourage Big Cats as Pets

To discourage the trend of keeping big cats as pets, the government has introduced a phase-out plan. Under this policy:

  • Owners will have 15 days to disclose their animals.
  • A mandatory registration period will follow.
  • Post-registration, owners must meet specific housing standards for their animals.
  • Breeding restrictions will be enforced.
  • Owners will be encouraged to sterilize their big cats.

Keeping big cats at home will no longer be permitted, and such animals will be relocated to breeding farms or zoos.

Strict Enforcement and Heavy Fines

Strict action, including heavy fines and animal confiscation, will be taken against those who fail to register their big cats. The new legislation aims to curb illegal trade, banning their sale, gifting, or social media content featuring these animals.

According to Punjab Wildlife, there are an estimated 200 to 300 lions and other big cats in the province. The registration fee will assist in tracking their population and ensuring better regulation.
