Punjab Local Body Elections Scheduled For December 2025 Says ECP

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially announced that Local Body Elections in Punjab will take place in December 2025. The polls will be held under the Local Government Act 2022, ensuring compliance with the latest legal framework governing local governance in the province.

The decision was made on Wednesday by a five-member ECP bench led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. The announcement came after months of hearings regarding Punjab’s long-delayed Local Body Elections, which were pending due to administrative and legal issues.

According to the ECP, the delimitation of constituencies will be completed within two months, paving the way for the elections later this year. The commission said that the elections would be conducted fairly and transparently, following all constitutional and legal requirements.

Earlier, the ECP had reserved its verdict after several hearings on the matter. During one of the sessions, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja expressed concern over delays in organizing Local Body Elections. He admitted that it was “embarrassing” that elections had not yet been conducted in Punjab and Islamabad.

The ECP also directed provincial authorities to extend full cooperation to ensure timely preparation for the polls. Officials stressed that the local government system plays a vital role in delivering public services and strengthening democracy at the grassroots level.

With the schedule now finalized, political parties in Punjab are expected to begin their preparations for the upcoming contests. Analysts believe these elections will be crucial for reshaping local governance and political influence across the province.

The ECP reaffirmed its commitment to holding free and transparent elections across Pakistan, stating that Local Body Elections are a constitutional requirement that empowers citizens and enhances accountability within government institutions.
