Punjab to Designate Pre-Partition Schools as Historical Heritage Sites

The Punjab Education Department has approved an initiative to preserve pre-Partition-era government schools by designating them as historical heritage sites. This significant project aims to restore and protect schools built during the British colonial period, ensuring their cultural and architectural legacy is maintained for future generations.

A circular issued by the Punjab secretary of school education directed the chief executive officers of district education authorities and district education officers across all 41 districts to gather detailed information on these historic schools. This data collection will include the schools’ construction dates, historical background, number of classrooms, auditoriums, staff rooms, and current student enrollment. Additionally, officials will assess the condition of the buildings, including any dilapidated structures, and identify whether any land is under illegal occupation.

Schools must also submit five recent photographs to accompany the data. Priority for renovation will be given to schools from the British colonial era, with special funds allocated to address building repairs and staffing shortages. These schools will be declared model institutions, and their student enrollment capacities will be expanded.

Furthermore, the initiative will highlight the achievements of notable alumni who have excelled in various fields, enhancing the reputation of these historic schools and preserving their legacy.
