Punjab Tightens Vehicle Registration Rules to Curb Tax Evasion

The Punjab government has made a significant change to its vehicle registration policy, aiming to tackle tax evasion and enhance security. The new policy prohibits residents from registering their vehicles in other provinces or in Islamabad, a practice that has been common among many to avoid local taxes.

This decision was recently approved by the Punjab cabinet and has received support from the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department. Officials have long been concerned about the loss of revenue and the security risks posed by vehicles registered outside the province.

Under the new rules, all vehicles owned by Punjab residents must be registered within the province. Violators who attempt to register vehicles elsewhere will face fines, and those caught during routine security checks may have their vehicles confiscated. The department is also collaborating with NADRA to integrate district codes to help authorities track these registrations more effectively.

The government is also working on simplifying the re-registration process for vehicles previously registered in other areas. Once the law is fully enacted, it is expected to improve tax compliance and bolster security measures across Punjab.
