Murree Brewery Co. Ltd. has raised significant concerns over the Punjab Excise department’s recent halt of exports for their alcoholic beverages. During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, Chairman Saleem Mandviwalla emphasized the seriousness of the matter, highlighting the potential loss of foreign exchange for the government as a result.
The company, based in Rawalpindi and operating under Punjab jurisdiction, has reportedly faced scrutiny from the Excise department, which questioned whether local demand for alcoholic beverages had been adequately met before allowing exports.

Mandviwalla criticized the Punjab government’s interference, asserting, “The Excise department of Punjab has no mandate to stop exports.” He questioned the basis for halting exports, arguing that the government should not impose restrictions based on local demand fulfillment.
A representative from the Punjab government assured the committee that there were no issues with the company’s exports. However, Mandviwalla pointed out the contradiction, asking why the company felt compelled to approach the parliamentary panel if there was indeed no problem.
In light of these discussions, the committee has directed the Punjab government to resolve the issues presented by the Provincial Excise department regarding the company’s export operations.
