Reportedly, the Punjab caretaker government has taken action to temporarily suspend the sentence of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia reference. It is said that the government exercised its authority under Section 401 of the Criminal Procedure Code to carry out this suspension.

According to Section 401, the government possesses the prerogative to halt the sentence of a convict. It is worth noting that Nawaz Sharif’s sentence had been suspended once before in 2019 when he traveled to London for medical treatment.

Amir Mir, the Information Minister of the caretaker Punjab government, confirmed that Nawaz Sharif’s sentence was suspended in accordance with the government’s constitutional powers. Nevertheless, he clarified during an interview that the government’s action only entails the suspension of the sentence, not its complete termination.

Back in December 2018, an accountability court had sentenced the former prime minister to seven years in prison in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption case. Furthermore, a fine of Rs1.5 billion and $25 million was imposed on Nawaz in the Al-Azizia case. The verdict also included a 10-year disqualification from holding any public office, which was to take effect after he completed the seven-year jail term.
