The Punjab government has launched an initiative to promote spoken Punjabi and Punjabi literature in all government schools across the province, the country’s most populous region.
Officials highlighted that students will now be encouraged to use polite expressions like “Tusi” and “Assi,” while avoiding informal or inappropriate language.
The program also emphasizes regional diversity: schools in southern Punjab will focus on Saraiki, while those in northern Punjab will promote Pothohari. Headteachers have been tasked with organizing local language activities and producing videos showcasing students speaking Punjabi or their regional dialects.
Spoken by millions, Punjabi is a vital cultural and social connector. Formal introduction in schools aims to instill pride in students’ roots, improve literacy, and enhance their ability to communicate effectively in their native language.
The initiative also seeks to preserve literature and folklore, strengthen cultural identity, and nurture confident students proud of their heritage. All videos will be shared through official CEO groups, and school heads must submit detailed progress reports. Officials say this step will reinforce linguistic roots and celebrate Punjab’s rich cultural legacy.
